The Fate of Billionaire Passengers on The Tourist Submarine Titanic
On Sunday (18/6), a tourist submarine operated by OceanGate Expeditions was reported missing.
When diving to see the wreck of the Titanic at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean, the submarine did not rise to the surface.
The luxury submarine is known to have carried five important figures, including billionaires, on the first mission to see the wreck of the Titanic.
Based on the latest news reported by the Independent, the remaining oxygen on board lasted only 40 hours.
Recently, according to Reuters, the possibility of the passengers of the submarine surviving is getting smaller.
By the wayside, the sub has just hours left of its estimated oxygen supply on Thursday, the fifth day of the massive multinational search across thousands of square miles of the remote North Atlantic.
The submarine has the dimensions of a van and is operated by OceanGate Expeditions, based in the United States (US).
The ship began its descent to the bottom at 8 a.m. (12.00 GMT) on Sunday (18/6).
Unfortunately, the ship lost contact with its support vessel near the end of what was supposed to be a two-hour dive to the wreck of the Titanic.
After departing with 96 hours of oxygen, the company said he would likely run out of oxygen by Thursday morning.
Exactly when depends on factors such as whether the plane still has power and how calm those on board are, said the experts involved in the search.
Experts also think the submarine is still intact.
The remotely operated underwater vehicle deployed from the Canadian ship has reached the seabed and begun searching there for the Titanic, the US Coast Guard said Thursday morning via Twitter.
A Canadian search team also claims to have recorded underwater sounds using sonar buoys on the day of the sinking and on Tuesday.
But a search team made up of experts and the coast guard said remote-controlled underwater vehicles that searched where the sounds were detected had yielded no results.
Relevant officials also warned that the sounds may not be coming from the ship.
"When you're in the midst of a search and rescue case, you always have hope," Coast Guard Captain Jamie Frederick said last Wednesday, adding his analysis of the sound was inconclusive.
As far as the search goes, the French research vessel Atalante, which is equipped with a robotic submarine capable of reaching the depths where the Titanic wreck lies, some 12,500 feet (3,810 meters) below the surface, arrived in the search zone on Thursday.
The research vessel Atalante is the first to use echo sounders to accurately map the seafloor for more precise search robots, says the French marine research institute Ifremer.
The robot, named Victor 6000, has a remote-controlled arm to help free trapped fleets or hook them to ships to transport them.
The US Navy is also involved in delivering a special rescue system designed to lift large underwater objects.
